Guidelines for Submissions
* Please review the following carefully. When ready, use the Content Submission Form provided (below) to upload your content.
General Content
Title/Cover Page
•Title
•Submission Type—Indicate the type of content you are submitting. For example: "Video, Case Report, Original Research" etc.
•Authors—List a maximum of six authors in the order that they should appear, including for each: first name, family name, and institutional affiliation (department is optional).
•Corresponding Author—Provide the name, e-mail address, and telephone number of the author to whom communications should be directed.
•Announcement Text—A 300-character (including spaces and punctuation) or less description of the content to be used for an announcement on the CSiI Homepage. The title is NOT acceptable announcement text; the title should not be part of the announcement text.
•Subject/Classification Terms—One or more terms from the CSiI Content Subject Classification list that identify the primary subject category of the content.
•Disclosure—Please include disclosure information, if it is applicable.
Text
•Content Format—A Microsoft Word document with figure and video (if included), locations denoted in the text with figure legends at the end of the text.
•Figure/Image—Submit images as jpg files. The size of the files is unimportant, assuming they are of adequate pixel density to render well on the screen. Large files can always be converted to smaller files, so file size should not be a concern of the author, although bigger (600 x 400 pixel range) is preferable to smaller. Images that are embedded in a file, such as a Microsoft Word document, are not acceptable.
•Figure/Video Legends—Each figure and video must have an accompanying explanatory legend and be clearly labelled.
•Video—Videos should be brief and clear.
Your material must contain no specific patient information and must be HIPAA compliant. For example, patient name or hospital identification numbers should not appear in images of radiographs, slides, or film.
If you are not the copyright holder of a portion of your submission (artist illustrations, images from books, photos, cartoons, music, video, etc.), you must obtain permission to publish the item(s) from the copyright holder.
Basic and Advanced Video Skill Series
The text should provide sufficient detail to permit an experienced surgeon to follow the guidelines, but include no extraneous background material. Write to the level of the practicing cardiothoracic surgeon. There is no set length for the text, but for most procedures a total of 4 to 6 typewritten pages should be sufficient. The text should be provided as a Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Word-compatible document.
Special headings are recommended to standardize the presentation and to ensure that specific points are addressed in each description. For most headings, a single paragraph or a number of bullet points should suffice. Use most of the text to provide a detailed description of special operative techniques. The headings to use include:
Patient selection
A brief paragraph should describe which patients are particularly good candidates for the procedure. When appropriate, specific exclusion criteria should be listed.
Operative steps
List as completely as possible the unique operative steps that are required to successfully perform the procedure. Write to the level of the practicing cardiothoracic surgeon. Several paragraphs may be necessary to complete this portion.
Desired instrumentation and equipment
List any unusual instrumentation, specific suture material, instructions for the nursing staff, etc, that are required to perform the procedure.
Tips and pitfalls
This section is the most personal expression of the author and is the most useful to the reader. Tricks of the trade are important. Describe what you look for that determines whether things are going well or whether the procedure should be aborted.
References
A short list (5 -10) of recently published and important articles should be provided. Be sure to include appropriate articles from your own bibliography. If there are useful online links with which you are familiar, list these as well.
Images and videos are an essential component of Basic and Advanced Video Skill Series and the author should indicate in the text where illustrations are to be included.
