Cardiac Sciences Symposium: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Congenital Heart Disease

Picture
An important group of congenital cardiovascular defects is that characterized by the presence of a left to right shunt and associated pulmonary arterial hypertension. Early identification and appropriate management plays a pivotal role in providing survival advantage and near normal life expectancy to this large group of patients. From 1952 when the first case series of 8 patients with PAH was reported to date new insights and newer tools have been added to the multi-pronged management of this rather complex manifestation of congenital heart diseases. This symposium has been organized to collectively gather some of the country’s finest experts to share their immense knowledge and experience in the management of PAH secondary to congenital heart diseases. From elaborating the natural history to discussing newer management techniques we attempt to formulate a strategy to highlight the need for a national database or registry for these patients and the importance of early screening methods if any to help achieve better outcomes.

OBJECTIVES OF THE SYMPOSIUM:
  • To elaborate on pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart defects.
  • To delineate the natural history of the illness in order to predict prognosis with Medical/ surgical therapy
  • To formulate a guideline based management in peri-operative period.
  • To explore newer challenges in the surgical treatment of severe PAH/ Eisenmenger’s syndrome
